I assume you mean cake frosting right? I absolutely HATE canned frosting! Ugh! It tastes nasty and making it is easy.I always make buttercream because it's simple. Take 1/4 lb of butter and let it get to room temp or put in micro on low for 30 sec to 1 min. Add 2 cups confectioners sugar slowly 1/2 cup at a time. Add 1 teasp. vanilla or other extract and 1/4 - 1/2 tsp salt. As it gets harder to mix add a bit of milk but be sparing. If you get it too thin add a little more sugar to thicken it. When you get it to the consistency you like use an electric mixer to beat it smooth.

The best I have ever had I made with butter, powdered sugar, heavy whipping cream and vanilla. I also add cocoa if I am making chocolate frosting.
This is a butter cream frosting, so you can replace the butter with heavy whipping cream if you want the fluffier stuff.
Take 1 stick of softened (not melted) butter, add 8 cups (yup, not lying!) powdered sugar, 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (use the good stuff, not mccormicks or the cheap stuff, you will appreciate it when you eat it).
If you want to make chocolate, the best way is to melt whatever type of chocolate you prefer in a double boiler (or you can put a bowl on top of a pot of hot water and melt the chocolate that way). Add about 8 oz of chocolate to the mix. The chocolate makes it a little more difficult, but worth it if you ask me!
Man, is this stuff yummy!!

BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

1 lb. confectioners' sugar
1/2 c. butter, softened
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 tbsp. milk
Food coloring (optional)

In large bowl, beat together sugar, butter, vanilla and milk until smooth. If necessary add more milk until frosting is spreading consistency. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring. Mix everything well.
Chocolate buttercream frosting - add 1/2 cup Hershey's cocoa.

Very easy and very good!
Hope this helps..
