Its a MALE dog thing. Its usually done to pee on the vertical...but some " boys " fall into the habit of lifting the leg all the time....my dog does this even in the middle of the yard ( and pees on his front feet ......nice...)

Unlike humans, a male dog has an extended prepuce which is closely attached to the abdomen. This means his penis points forward, not down. If he were to just sit there and pee, he'd get urine all over his belly, chest, and legs. And that would be gross. Lifting a leg allows him to pee to the side and mark vertical surfaces.

So he won't pee on his front paws, of course! My dog is finally catching on to lifting a leg to pee, and he's 4 years old. He's usually smarter than that.....

Oh yes, and to mark things. The higher up you can pee, the bigger the other dogs think you are.

While I don't know the scientific reason for male dogs doing this, I can tell you that it is a learned behavior. Many male dogs learn to lift their leg by watching other male dogs. Both of my 2 year old male dogs still squat!

And I suspect that they lift their leg because they want to get real close to what they are peeing on.

Mainly male dogs, For if he does not cock the leg, he urinates on himself. Female dogs squat and initially so do male pups but they soon learn to lift the leg and mark territory at nose level to ward away opposition

All boy dogs lift their legs no matter where they are peeing and all girl dogs squat.

It allows them to angle the stream higher on a vertical surface (like a tree or a wall). That way the smell is at nose level so passing dogs can easily smell who left the "message".

to pee on vertical surfaces, so other dogs can smell who has been in a certain area, it is saying "im not intimidated by any other dog, so i will proove it by leaving proof that i was here"

Because they cant stand on only two and they dont like to go on themselves. The boys like to make sure their territory is marked so they aim directly.
