This is as much a puzzle in English grammar as it is in math.
The key to answering this is in the tenses of the words used.

if you HAVE 5 ice cubes = present tense (meaning you have 5 NOW).

if 2 MELTED = past tense (meaning you no longer have these two).

If 2 have already melted, and you have 5 now.
The answer is 5, not 3.
You must have started with 7, if 2 have already melted.

ANSWER = FIVE ! !
