i get many of the accusations people throw toward islam today but i dont understand this claim at all. islam does not allow rape; the Quran forbids it and the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) put a man to death when he raped another woman. the punishment for rape is not a few months in jail--it's death!! the fact that some muslims still rape women does not prove anything. i'm not defending the actions of muslims; many are muslims only by name. now if a christian raped a women i would not say that he represents christianity because i know better. the crime rate in islamic countries is very low, especially in Saudi Arabia. there is no where in the Quran that allows rape. so why do people say these things? and then if one person would say something like that i would ignore it but then i see many people over here agreeing!

O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness, that ye may Take away part of the dower ye have given them,-except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and Allah brings about through it a great deal of good.

and the hadith.....
Book 38, Number 4366:
Narrated Wa'il ibn Hujr:
When a woman went out in the time of the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) for prayer, a man attacked her and overpowered (raped) her.

She shouted and he went off, and when a man came by, she said: That (man) did such and such to me. And when a company of the Emigrants came by, she said: That man did such and such to me. They went and seized the man whom they thought had had intercourse with her and brought him to her.

She said: Yes, this is he. Then they brought him to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him).

When he (the Prophet) was about to pass sentence, the man who (actually) had assaulted her stood up and said: Apostle of Allah, I am the man who did it to her.

He (the Prophet) said to her: Go away, for Allah has forgiven you. But he told the man some good words (AbuDawud said: meaning the man who was seized), and of the man who had had intercourse with her, he said: Stone him to death.

It is all propoganda. You have to remember there are three main tactics used by the opponents of any religion to show that the religion they oppose is somehow wrong in a moral sense. Those things are cruelty to animals and children, human sacrifice and canibalism, and rape. By claiming that a religion allows these things it allows the opponents to take a moral high ground as say that they are superior becaue they do not advocate those thigns.

Those claims have been used for millenea and will continue to be used as long as people find those things repugnant..

The problem is with Islamic law. We have heard that when a woman is raped she has to have witnesses or it is not prosecuted. I know this is true because one of the countries over there, I think Pakistan or maybe Turkey recently changed that law and it was in the news. So when a woman can be raped, but not able to report it, that is the same in our minds as 'allowing it'. The Islamic laws are not favorable to women. I am sorry if what I am going to say is offensive, but you need to look at it openly. Islam seems to me to be an evil religion because of its treatment of women as less than human. In my opinion, only the Evil One would make a religion like that to deceive the people. If this is not what your religion is like then your husband, brothers, uncles and the other men need to work to change the way the Islamic laws are written. You can do nothing, because you are a woman and no one in your culture, if you are in the Middle East, will listen to you.

Here is a good, informative article on the topic:

http://www.muslimaccess.com/articles/Women/rape_in_islam.asp

Sûrah an Nâs 4.119
'O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will...'

"The crime of rape is classified not as a subcategory of ‘zina’ (consensual adultery), but rather as a separate crime of violence under hiraba. This classification is logical, as the "taking" is of the victim’s property (the rape victim’s sexual autonomy) by force. In Islam, sexual autonomy and pleasure is a fundamental right for both women and men (Ghazâlî); taking by force someone’s right to control the sexual activity of one’s body is thus a form of hiraba."

Islam allows the rape of POWs/captives/slaves. They don't get a say in the matter. I guess you're actually going to say that these married captive women wanted to have sex in front of their captive husbands, right? Abu Dawud (2150) - "The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives. Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur’anic verse: (Qur'an 4:24) 'And all married women (are forbidden) unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess.'" No matter what you say, just owning or possessing someone is wrong, but having sex with a person who is not free is always rape.

You have to realize that until recently most Americans knew very little about Islam or Muslim. There is conflict now between our country and Muslim countries. Every mid-easterner is assumed to be Muslim and everything any one of them do represents Islam to us. May not be accurate but we only usually get to see the bad ones and to us, their being Muslim, it means they believe in whatever they are doing.
I hope this makes sense.

Edit: I'm sure that's true for most Muslims when they see people from a Christian country committing crimes---

Apparently a woman needs four witnesses as defence.
Now who would rape a woman in front of 4 witnesses?
That is why they rape women in front of no witnesses at all so the soman will have no legal recourse.

From my point of view, the women are blamed for putting themselves in the situation where they get raped. This takes the blame and the responsibility off the rapist and therefore seems as though they have done nothing wrong. But that's just from my point of view.

1- Rape is not even mentioned in the Koran
2-Sharia law requires 4 witnesses for rape.
3-If a woman accuses rape, but can't prove it, she is charged with adultery and can be stoned to death.

Rape doesn't really exist as a crime under sharia because of this structure.
