Its good to know some basic defense moves with disarmment. Most people will come at you with a knife or a gun. So the kick is not effective at that point, you need to know how to take a weapon from a attacker...first and key.

Yes, Any Martial Arts with the proper attention to real application in the technique, it will be effective.

But, the Martial Art is only as effective as the person using it, if you trained well and practiced as much as possible or have a good training ethic, you can do well to defend yourself.

But if you didn't learn anything by paying attention, or training as often OUTSIDE of class as you did inside the class, or have a poor training ethic, then you could lose just as easily.

What? Hail yeah! If you are a low-level martial artist you give yourself an advantage already. You must realize, are lost by the one who tires quickly. Most fights in the street are people with little to no skill and out of shape. Most likely, you couldn't even pick a fight with a skilled martial artist because they wouldn't bother wasting their time. Of course martial arts is effective, it has saved lives. You have a better chance of survival using the art against multiple attackers, especially so.

anything can be effective if the user acts according to the needs of the situation. thinking outside of your training helps too. training only serves as a platform to develop awareness of the needs at any given time.

sometimes the brain says 'run', other times it says 'go for the knees'

you have to have trust in not only your physical ability, but your instinct. if it makes you fight contrary to your style, could you do it? having to fight to a rigidity can be the reason a lot of martial artists get wasted. dont ever expect to fight orthodox on the street. the bastards are tricky little mofo's with plenty of guile and tricks up the sleeve.

the key to fighting on the street is to keep on advancing while you continue the attack. dont punch block dodge and jump back, punch block kick, and jump back... like its the dojo. a street fighter ensures it is all one way traffic, so make it go your way. once you have committed make it happen! and never let up. as soon as you ease up on the attack like you would in the dojo, the enemy will gather his wits and its your turn. so keep going even though it sucks and you dont want to be there.

The can be....IF th practical application was given the attentino necessary in class. I have seen far too many schools in the last 30 years where that aspect was either down played or ignored entirely. Too many students thingk that just becasue they are good at sparing that they can fight, then when a real life situatin comes up they wind up getting hurt becasue they werent traing to deal with situations where rules don't apply. IF you want your skills tob e street effective then you have to train for that...other wise...they won't be.
