Yes, it's existence by comparison. We judge everything by comparing it to established principles. Thus we judge our existence by comparing it to.....not existing. But how can we do this when not a single person ever in the history of our species has been non-existent and lived to talk about it?

You make a good point. I recommend that you make all your decisions under the assumption that you don't exist. Try it for six months or so and report back on how it went.
