New American Bible:

The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack.

In green pastures you let me graze; to safe waters you lead me; you restore my strength.

You guide me along the right path for the sake of your name.

Even when I walk through a dark valley, I fear no harm for you are at my side; your rod and staff give me courage.

You set a table before me as my enemies watch; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Only goodness and love will pursue me all the days of my life; I will dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.

With love in Christ.

As the Lord is the Good Shepherd, we are his sheep.
When we allow God our shepherd to guide us, we have contentment. When we choose to sin, we go our own way and cannot blame God for the environment (valleys) we create for ourselves. Our shepherd knows the "green pastures" and "still waters" that will restore us. We struggle with other enemies, pain, disease, suffering, injury. But strength and courage cannot overcome death. It has the final word. Only our Lord can walk with us though deaths dark valleys and bring us safely to the other side. To eternal life.

Words of comfort. David could hardly have found a more fitting way to describe how God leads, protects, and feeds his sheep. David’s warm expressions have been preserved to give us confidence that we too can look to our Creator as our Shepherd. Yes, as long as we stay close to Jehovah, he will care for us as a loving Shepherd “to the length of days,” even to all eternity.
