I have made a little less than $2,000 last year. I went to Jackson H to file my tax, but the person there told me that I do not need to file it unless I had made over $3,000. I thought everyone who earns money must file something, even a form for tax examption, according to someone I also talked to. What really is the truth?

I would go ahead and file online if I were you. There are a lot of online freefile sites (since your income is so small it would be free...they will tell you that at the end of your form) that you could use (I used H & R Block) and who knows, you might get a refund so it's worth a try. Here's a link below to help answer your question about whether you should file or not.

My understanding is that you must report any income over $600. Heck, I even filed on time in a year I made only $150. If you are a full-time student you are not automatically granted an exemption; you still must file something. My gf has to file to report her grants and financial aid. However, I'd probably have to nullify this if you spoke to an expert CPA at Jackson Hewitt and they told you otherwise. I ask you this, though, will the CPA at Jackson Hewitt go to bat for you if the IRS decides to audit you? I would visit irs.gov and read the information and download the forms you need and file something just to be safe. It shouldn't hurt you in any way.

I'd go to another tax profesional and ask them. Or even get one of those tax computer programs. Or go to the irs homepage and look through their info.

I would call H&R block and ask them but I think that is right.
