What is the difference between choking somebody and killing them as to a choke you see in Ultimate Fighting where somebody is temporarily passed out?

If you choke somebody - as in an attempt to kill them - you are effectively shutting off their oxygen intake and they will eventually die from oxygen starvation.

A choke-hold is different in that you are not aiming to shut off their oxygen, but the blood supply to their brain by holding the Carotid Artery and the Jugular Vein closed. This will, of course, also eventually kill - that's why a choke-hold only lasts a few seconds.

CHOKE-HOLDS CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS UNLESS PROPERLY TRAINED

Just watned to add, you see in movies people going up from behind and chocking the guy. Lasts only for a few seconds and the guy drops. He wouldnt' be dieing, just passing out.

Saw on an interview with some serial killer, he said it takes a good 12 minutes to choke someone to death...(might be overkill).

the difference is letting go. when you want them unconscious you let go when they slump after 'temporarily' starving the brain of oxygen, then the reflexed breathing reintroduces oxygen back into the brain and they eventually come to. if you want them dead, you keep the choke on for as long as it takes to "permanently" starve the brain of the oxygen.

Bruce K, 12 minutes is indeed overkill, and a serial killer has issues and probably found the intimacy a good reason to keep holding.

choke out in ultimate fighting cuts off blood to the brain, causing temporary unconsciousness. choking to kill cuts off oxygen to the body, causing permanent unconsciousness

IT CAN TAKE ONLY 10 SECONDS TO PASS OUT
TO KILL WOULD REQIRE LOSS OF BLOOD TO THE BRAIN FOR MUCH LONGER
