Annie ... Something similar happened to me. I wanted to ask my credit card provider how that might have happened. I wanted to know whether I had done anything wrong. However, they politely declined to give me many details. I think they don't like to discuss the various weaknesses that are inherently part of the system. To make things as convenient as possible for you, the legitimate account owner, they open themselves up to a certain amount of thievery, unfortunately.
How did your info get compromised? The scam artists might have just guessed or someone may have obtained your personal info from one of the businesses you had dealings with and their data security standards may be weak.
Even a lender who has routine access to the databases of the credit agencies may have a dishonest employee who periodically obtains personal data from innocent people at random.
As the system presently works, completely stopping this kind of fraud is impossible. However, keeping vigilant and watching your accounts is the best defense.
I'm glad you caught it, Annie. Good luck.

Your card has probably been cloned. This can be done anywhere the card is not in your view, with a minimum of equipment (basically just a magnetic strip reader connected to a laptop and an imprint machine).
The card is swiped through the reader, which sends the data it reads from the card to the laptop. An imprint of the card is taken to make sure the details stamped into the face match those on the strip.
The criminals who made the duplicate card then sell it to someone (normally, but not always) far from where you live.
My advice is to check your account thoroughly for more transactions you did not make - prior to the one in Italy. If you find any more, notify your bank immediately (although it may already be too late to recover the funds). You should also notify the police, if you (or the bank) havn't already done so.

Writing from Rome: The Italians humorous tale that the only issues you hit upon on the streets of Rome throughout the time of August are mad canines and Englishmen. the city is surprisingly empty, however the vacationer enterprise remains going. you will not have any concern looking places to stay or to consume (yet countless the interior of reach much less-touristy places might desire to close). My advice even nevertheless is take WATER everywhere you flow, and positioned on a hat (ideally straw)! August is the favourite month and the main humid! the two Rome and Florence can attain as much as a hundred F (37 C) and that may not counting the warmth index (warmth plus humidity which makes it sense even warmer). The cities might desire to not "close down" consistent with se, yet on the holiday, you will discover limited public transportation and practically all shops would be closed. some tips: are not getting on the Metro in Rome interior the midsection. flow to the two end of the prepare. The pickpockets be attentive to to flow to the midsection considering that maximum vacationers only get on suited while they arrive on the platform (in many cases the midsection of the prepare). in case you're taking the sixty 4 bus in Rome, look ahead to pickpockets. that's difficulty-free simply by fact the vacationer bus and as such attracts them. the final time to flow to St. Peter's Basilica is before 8:30 interior the morning (it opens at 7:00) or after 3:00 interior the afternoon. the reason being that early interior the morning, the excursion communities have not arrived yet. interior the afternoon, the excursion communities can not enter after 4:30 and so the line dies down around 3:00. have fun with your holiday.

Could have been someone sending something saying they are your bank and wanted you to type in the number to verify your account. Or could be from a store you used the card at got hacked and they got your number that way. Either way best to cancel it and get a new one. They could have gotten it through an atm too.

Spyware on public computers can steal the info. Also, some dishonest merchants, restaurant employees sell your info that they get when you use your card. You were smart to keep an eye out on your credit card bill.

and continue to keep an eye on your credit reports to act fast if it happens again.

Been to any restaurants lately? You pay for a meal, they walk away with your card, write down the details and come back with your receipt... Later that night, they go online and go shopping. Pretty simple.

do you still have your debit card in YOUR POSSEISTION?
