Actually this is a historical question that deserves many books of study to understand some of the basics.
REading the history of the catholic church will make almost any catholic cry tears of sorrow for being so easily deceived. My grandfather was one such person.
the more he studied the more he realized how evil the catholic church became.
Therefore LUTHER nailed his protests to the door.
but protestants became POLITICALLY adverse to the HISTORICAL control of the Catholic church and Feigned their own AUTHORITY. Where they had no authority at all to do so except to rebel against the POPE.
So it would be more correct to ask about Pope infalibilty, which can never be DIVINELY TRUE because all men are easily corrupted with power. And why PROTESTANTS dont call the catholic church christian.
HOWEVER, from my own experience, FAITH proves to be the unviversal religion. a universal faith where everyone believes in God is the only truth. AFter that the teachings and precepts and doctrines of man are called an abomination to God. So even if the CAtholic church or budhaism or hinduism were started by God NO matter what religion is out there ALL religions have been corrupted by Satan because Mankind are so easily deceived.
see how nations are deceived Rev 18:23
See Faith and righteouseness are acceptible to God Act 10:34,35

because all we have is a number. I don't care if christians are the largest group or not. Let the catholics call themselves semi-christians. Then we can get a true number. Think about your church though, question it, get the answers that you want to know from them. If they cant or wont answer its time to move on. Catholics are good people, but I really don't think its the same as christianity. But, I do like the catholic people.

You see. The Chtholics when asked about their religion, their answer is 'Catholics' very seldom they would refer themselves as Christians when being pressed with more questions. In their teaching, their worship in church is for Catholics, other denominations will have difficulty to join in or participate in fully especially in regards to the celebration of Holy Communion. Yes, when we take on a census count on the number of Christians, Catholics are considered as Christians. This goes the other way as well.
Well, let illustrate this by assuming you have a family made up of several races through marriages and intermarriages. You would call this group and you belong to the family of Smith for example for all of you. When comes to individual count, you would say, your big sister's husband is a Swiss, and therefore all the offspring of this husband including your sister are Swiss. Hope this is clear to explain why the count on the number of Christians of the world is done that way. After all the Catholics and the Christians (see I have already done the differentiation) believe in the same God, the Father, the same Jesus and the same Holy Spirit.
It is not surprising that there are some Catholics who may ask other Christians which Jesus they believe and viceversa. My opinio is Jesus has given us a teaching that any believer can go to God the Father direct, whereas, most Catholics would go through Mary, the mother of Jesus, or other saints. Going direct to God, is not encouraged if not forbidden.
Well, the Lord's prayer has this to say, 'Our Heavenly Father, Hallowed be your name'. And so, if you call God the Heavenly Father, do you have to go to other to reach Him? But....on earth perhaps, many children have done that as they use their mothers to make request to their fathers. Because out of fear of stern father, children may have to do that.
But for believers who have the Bible in their hands, they should understand they can go direct to their Heavenly Father for anything. Jesus said, 'ask the Father God for anything in my name.' That's why, in each close of a prayer, these words will be said, 'in the name of Jesus, we pray' . This is the teaching of Jesus. Read the Gospels to confirm.

HI Midge,
I don't know really. I do know that there are far fewer Christians on this earth than I would like. I do not believe that saying you believe in Christ makes you a Christian.. I am not a Catholic. I am a Christian according to the New Testament scriptures. Please read on if you will.
Study these scriptures and see what you think. To become a Christian:
1. HEAR - Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
2. BELIEVE - In Mark 16:16, Jesus said “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
3. REPENT - Luke 13:3 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.
4. CONFESS CHRIST - 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
5. BE BAPTIZED - Romans 6:3-4 do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
6. CONTINUE TO BE FAITHFUL - Jesus said in Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”
Send me a note if you have questions. I am anxious to hear from you. Have a Great day.

John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
The dictionary defines a Christian as a person who professes or follows the teaching of Christ who is the Son of God. 1 John 2:3 says that "We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him"
I realize that this modern society suffers from the "truth is relative" disorder, but to be a Christian you MUST believe in Christ and His teaching alone. No pope or priest speaks to/for God. There is no praying to Mary or saints, no rosaries, no indulgences, no purgatory, infant baptism, penance (the list can go longer). All of these things are in violation of what the Bible, which is the absolute authority on the issue, clearly states as a qualification of being a Christian IE "obeying Christ's commands".

Most non-Catholic Christian denominations accept Catholics as Christians. A very few do not.
A dictionary would say that a Christian is someone professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
Catholics would fit this definition.
In the Nicene creed, from 325 A.D., Catholics profess:
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.
Through Him all things were made.
For us and our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We are baptized as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19, "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
We truly are spiritually "born again," we just don't usually use those words.
With love in Christ.

I do not consider them to be Christian, and I don't lump myself with them. Catholics worship and pray to human beings - I believe that only God / Jesus / Holy Spirit are to be worshiped and prayed to. In my personal experience, the people I've met that call themselves Catholic do not show the fruit of Christianity. They are Catholic in name only. I do believe that some Catholics are Christians, but as a group, I think the numbers are a lot less.

A Christian is one who believes in the finished work of Christ on the cross to redeem sinners. They believe that he has paid the price for their sins in full and have received this gift of salvation by faith.
Is this what a Catholic believes?

Well, this is an age old fight between the Catholics and the Protestants.
I'm a protestant and I don't believe the Pope should be elevated the way Catholics have elevated him.
I don't believe I have to go to a Priest to have my sins forgiven, I can go directly to God the Father.
I don't believe in worshiping Mary -- Catholics say they don't but you do go to her in prayer when all you have to do is ask in Jesus name. This looks to non-Catholics as worshiping.
I still don't understand the rosary thing -- you don't need anything else but Jesus Christ.

I don't think any denomination which truly teaches Christ can make the claim that another denomination isn't Christian. Now as individuals we can certainly question practices.
For example some of the snake handling groups, I think live a gross misinterpretation of scripture.
