When Jesus is being tortured and crucified He prays, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." He died for the lost and the ones to come. However before Christ died as the ultimate sacrifice for all sin there was a system of law set up for Jews to follow. That is why there were sacrifices made at regular intervals during the year. Ever heard of a scapegoat? These were often used by the priests to lay allt he sins of the people upon and send into the dessert as an offering. That is why Christ's death was so monumental. It abolished the law. We no longer have to sacrifice, we simply have to accept God by faith and Christ's death. Don't get me wrong there are still ethical laws that we must follow, but as far as no one being able to come before the throne of God except for the priest and having to paint goats blood over our doors during passover, these things are no longer needed. To research more into this read Exodus, Leviticus and numbers, Isaiah, and then skip to the new testament and read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Those books should help answer questions about forgiveness and how things worked before Christ's death.

I am not a Jewish person but, Jesus' death transcends all time. He died for past present, and future people. This is why the Catholic Mass is so awesome. It acts like a time machine and everyone is at the Crucifixion. What would you say to him if you were at his feet while he was crucified? At the Mass where a few people realize where they are , he receives some sort of consolation. We stand there with St. John and The Blessed Virgin Mary and the other women. The other denominations "look on from a distance" This is what Scripture says of the other disciples. It was John to whom the Blessed Virgin was given by Jesus and it says he took her into his house ever since. There is no other religion that has had such a devotion to the Virgin Mother like the Catholics. Do you think the other disciples made fun of him for his devotion to her or did they love her too and maybe thought John was truly blessed to have the honor of caring for her?

Jesus Christ went into hell for three days to preach to souls in prison that died before he came and give them the same message he preached while he was on earth; 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

Jesus died on the cross for the sins of all humans that have ever lived, but we have to recieve His forgiveness by faith in Him as Lord and Savior. John 3:16 says: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life." He prayed Father forgive them as the soldier's nailed Him to the cross, but remember it was for our sins He stayed on the cross. So while the soldiers were actually in charge of the death sentence it was love for you and me that held Him. It was the payment He made to redeem us from sin. He die for all sins past present and future. With God time and space do not exist.
"Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus,"Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. And they parted His raiment, and cast lots. Luke 23:34
And He (Jesus Christ) is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but, also for the sins of the whole world. I John2:2

Most Jews don't believe Jesus died for any specific reason. Most Jews are not messianic, meaning they don't see Jesus as the messiah. I don't believe Jews are the ones to ask here. To be blunt.

Since the fall of man, the basis of salvation has always been the death of Christ. No one, either prior to the cross or since the cross, would ever be saved without that one pivotal event in the history of the world. Christ's death paid the penalty for past sins of Old Testament saints and future sins of New Testament saints.
The requirement for salvation has always been faith. The object of one's faith for salvation has always been God. The psalmist wrote, "Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him" (Psalm 2:12). Genesis 15:6 tells us that Abraham believed God and that was enough for God to account it to him for righteousness (see also Romans 4:3-8). The Old Testament sacrificial system did not take away sin, as Hebrews 9:1-10:4 clearly teaches. It did, however, point to the day when the Son of God would shed His blood for the sinful human race.
What has changed through the ages is the content of a believer's faith. God's requirement of what must be believed is based on the amount of revelation He has given mankind up to that time. This is called progressive revelation. Adam believed the promise God gave in Genesis 3:15 that the Seed of the woman would conquer Satan. Adam believed Him, demonstrated by the name he gave Eve (v.20) and the Lord indicated His acceptance immediately by covering them with coats of skin (v.21). At that point that is all Adam knew, but he believed it.
Abraham believed God according to the promises and new revelation God gave him in Genesis 12 and 15. Prior to Moses, no Scripture was written, but mankind was responsible for what God had revealed. Throughout the Old Testament, believers came to salvation because they believed that God would someday take care of their sin problem. Today, we look back, believing that He has already taken care of our sins on Calvary (John 3:16; Hebrews 9:28).
What about believers in Christ's day, prior to the cross and resurrection, what did they believe? Did they understand the full picture of Christ dying on a cross for their sins? Late in his ministry, "Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day" (Matthew 16:21). What was the reaction of His disciples to this message? "Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, '‘Far be it from you, Lord; this shall not happen to you!'" (16:22). Peter, and the other disciples, did not know the full truth, yet they were saved because they believed that God would take care of their sin problem. They didn't exactly know how He would accomplish that, any more than Adam, Abraham, Moses, or David knew how, but they believed God.
Today, we have more revelation than did people living before the resurrection of Christ, we know the full picture. "God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2). Our salvation is still based on the death of Christ, our faith is still the requirement for salvation, and the object of our faith is still God. Today for us the content of our faith is that Christ died for our sins, that He was buried, and that He rose the third day (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Why Jews only please? The Jews don't believe He was God's son, the Messiah. They're still waiting for Him to come. I'd have loved to have answered your question, but your loss.
