In a Democracy should not the military be Democratic?

Should military personnel (soldiers, sailors, etc) be thoroughly informed of the complete details of a proposed war so that an individual, inteligent decision can made, then allowed to vote to participate in the fight? If the majority votes in favor,THAT majority goes to the war, instead .of the participation being arbitrarily dictated by those who would send them and not participate.

In the military they say: "We're here to protect democracy, not to practice it!"

That would be nice, but it wouldn't work out very well if they debated everything they did before they did it.

No, democracy doesn't work. America isn't a democracy. Plus they need disapline in the military. These soldiers gave up their rights when they signed up. If they didn't know what they were getting into, its too bad. They don't whine and cry when they are collecting checks in peace time. If it was a draft, then it might be a different story. The people vote on it they go to war or not. The people vote for congress, and they are supposed to be the ones that declare war. Since they aren't doing it, blame the congress.

The military is an arm of democracy. Democracy tells them to do something and the military does it.
There comes a time when debating and talking about things is not practicable.
By the way how did you come up with such deep and meaningful question?

Absolutely NOT!

Military is just that military. It's a different way of life and those who can't take it shouldn't be in it.

National Security and lives are at stake and there will be times when one must act immediately and there won't be time to take a vote.

In the military you do as you're told, when you're told and how often you're told.

Young'ns now a days can't take that.

Oh, yeah, I'm an old time Veteran and proud of it.

No. That is ridiculous. In the military you need to follow orders from superiors almost with out question or discipline would break down and we would no longer have a functioning military. An orderly chain of command is required for a functioning military.

They get paid during a time of peace. Being part of the military means you are ready to fight for whatever cause the government elected by the people chooses. This is what they signed up for. Asking them if they want to earn the money they have been getting is ridiculous.

A military depends on soldiers following orders...diciplin....being organized. Seeing who would like to go fight would be like putting diesel fuel and jet fuel into your car to see what one it likes. You won't get it running properly.

My family is not democratic. My children do not get to vote to go out at 3am, or not go to school. Daddy makes the rules. This is NOT democracy.

In this day and age, not one man would "voluntarily" go to war. Today's society, run by liberalistic views, are wimps. WWII vets lied about their age to fight for their freedom. Now people gripe and whine for days about fighting for freedom. If people don't want to fight for freedom, they don't deserve to have it. Then let's see what the reaction will be.

I will throw this for a loop. This country was design as a republic, not democratic. Unfortunately, America is so bent on its individual rights it will crack the foundation for years to come.

The military by it's very nature is not and can not function as a democracy. Unfortunately the soldiers who fight and die are at the mercy of sometimes unqualified and inept leadership.

That kinda military would be not able to invade McDonald's.

What if everyone wants a war and the military votes no. Your idea makes no sense at all.

No. That idea is positively stupid. In the military one is obliged to follow orders. It is not at all based on civilian society. You can't have enlisted men, infantry, privates and such, determining for themselves if they agree with a war and whether or not they will fight. You don't have an army then, you have a bunch girly pansy wimps.

In the military there is chain of command.
It is not necessary for every order to be approved of my every soldier. This would be insane!

Yes soldier are informed about what is going on but there are still superiors that give orders!
