My old Oxford University college invited me back to the college for a reunion one evening last summer. When I arrived there was nobody there I recognised because there were very few people there from my year.
I got talking to one guy at the bar. He invited me to join his group, who he seemed to know. They seemed pleasant enough. However after a short break he introduced me to a girl. She asked me to sit down, whereupon she proceeded to give me a massage. I assumed she was also a student, which would be OK. However it turned out she was a massuese in the bar, and at the end this guy handed her a £20 note. It seems rather odd to have done that for me. The only thing I can think is that it was a subtle put-down, that he was a rich banker (which he was) and wanted to subtly demonstrate to his friends that I was not up to his standards: a put-down.
But maybe I am wrong, and he was happy with my company, and as a fellow graduate he was showing a generous largesse towards me.

Honestly, what difference does it make? You got a massage and you didn't have to pay for it. Enjoy the gift. It's not like you're ever going to see that guy again.
Peace

While you were getting a massage at his expense (£20 is cheap)
He was having his ego massaged by waving around his money.
I doubt he was putting you down, more likely showing off to his Friends.
If he really thought you were someone he wanted to join the group, he would have asked for your mobile no. to invite you to his country manor.
If you aren't ever likely to meet him again I wouldn't worry.

What was/is this person like? Maybe he thought you were a good fellow for putting up with it? It could have been an initiation to his group of which you passed? It could have been a lot worse i suppose but why would anyone try to embassas a stranger? Have you spoken to him since as it could be useful to have a banker as a 'valueable' contact.

Well, to be honest, it does sound a bit odd to me. You were the one who was there & know exactly how the conversations and the body language went but I reckon that he probably enjoyed you having your massage more than you did!!!!

Have you ever thought that it doesnt really matter. It sounds a bit up tight to be worried about. Do you often have people rubbing you in bars?

Doesn't matter if it was sincere or not. The best thing you could do is say Thank You! (sincerely and with enthusiasm) to him for the generous gift.

Whats a "mickey" anway? I thought it was a drug....

I surely wish I could be so rightly insulted on a daily basis!
Please let us know when the next reunion will be held. My mates and I will be there.

Sounds like a bit of a far fetched story to me!

even if it was an insult it wasn't a very good one because you didn't even think about it. And besides, I'd say if there was a joke it was at HIS expense....a 20 note to be precise..hahaha
