Yes, I did it once on an accident. Scared him so bad he even put off an odor. I had company that usually when they come out of the bathroom, my kitty will wait at the corner and my company will come out on their hands and knees and he loves that, it is play time for him.
They were in the living room and I came out on my hands and knees from another room and when he noticed me, he puffed up and had his ears in his head walking sideways! He didn't calm down for about a half an hour and was jumpy the rest of the night. He thought I was in the living room too. I usually don't play with him like that, especially when he was already distracted.
On other occasions, he will just jump and run sideways puffed up as in a playful mood and want me to chase him so he can come running back.
Now, though he is a sick kitty and doesn't really play anymore. He is 9 months old and may have to be euthanized soon because of heart worms. :(

I had this kitty who loved to do this. He would hide behind the breakfast bar and I would walk past and he would go sideways and puff up. I'd back up into the kitchen, he'd hide, and we'd do it all over again. He'd get tired of this game after about 10 times.
He was such a silly cat. Harley, RIP.

Yes, I call it Poofy Tail, because the fur on my cat's tail puffs out to twice its size. The fur on her back stands up too. She hops sideways a couple times and then races through every room like a maniac.

My male cat gets a puffy tail, but never walks sideways, that would be funny. My female has a short tail, she is a British Short hair, her tail does not get puffy, she just hisses instead. Both love to play, they never get really mad, to them they act like it is a game. Cats can be funny.

Yes, I've suprised him and made him puff up. Although, I'v never noticed that he would walk like a crab after that.
What's worse, I've suprised my husband, and he's done that!!!!! lol

yes I do. He knows that i am going to play with him and knows that he is not going to get hurt at all. He knows that we love him as much as he loves us. If you have had your cat a long time than he will know that you are not going to hurt him and that you didn't mean it or you just want to play with him. I hope this helps a little!

LOL! Yes, I have made my cat do that before. It's a natural reflex to make them look bigger and fiercer.
