I took french in high school and now I'm taking Spanish and getting all confused.

Personally I just repeat it to myself over and over. I may even replace all the words to a song with that one word, and say it in my head to the tune. Then I go back a little later and check I haven't forgotten it. The more you learn the easier it gets, because you start to recognise patterns. I also try to recall words when I'm out and about, for example if I've just learnt the word for window, every time I see a window I'll think to myself "ventana".

Since basically the first things you learn is how to introduce to some other people, descriptions and basic vocabulary for starting conversations, I suggest you to write questions, then interview people and take notes with the answers they give you (not necessarily long sentences, just notes). Then, you write short paragraphs that you can read aloud later. You can also play Guess who, asking people for describing someone so you have to guess, and vice versa.

With this exercise you put into practice all the abilities you develop when learning a language: reading, writing, listening to, speaking and thinking.
