Does anyone know its true origin? Does it have anything to do with allegiance to William of Orange, as someone told me the other day.

It does according to wikipedia, but it is of course updated by the public so there is no guarantee it is true. But that does mean at least someone else has heard of it at least!

I believe this originated in America for people who lived in the mountains. There used to be a programme on TV some time back, it was called "The Beverley Hill Billies". It was about a Family who lived in the mountains, and they found oil on their land. They moved to Beverley hills, but still lived in the style that they have always done.

The early settlers in apalacion mountains USA included a large number of Scottish who were inclined to call their sons William so people began calling them Hillbillys . Sorry about spelling of mountains.
