My water softener can take either salt or potassium according to the Culligan man who sold it to me. I just want to know which is healthier? My mother-in-law is a nurse and says to much potassium can give you heart problems...but to much salt isn't good either. Which is better for you as far as health issues go, salt or potassium?

brets right. softeners use salt. pellets or blocks. potassium permangenate is used in iron filters.
edit- the amount of salt/potassium used is not enough to do anything to your health, if you are worried, ask the culligan man how many grams are dispersed during the cycle then ask your dr. if its healthy. i'm sure you'll find that you're worrying over nothing.

I have two water conditioning machines, I have salt in one and potassium permanganate in the other. I think each machine has to use only one type of product.
