I don't see a problem with you going home early if your boss is OK with it. On the other hand, perhaps you mean leave but allow your boss to believe you were actually there until 5. That would be lying and could be considered stealing the pay you earned from the time you left until 5.

Depends on if you are paid by the hour or are on salary. If you are hourly, do you need the extra half hour of money? If you are on salary, have you completed a day's worth of work?
I'd rather go home than sit around the office not working.
