A few things..

1) Alcohol - this is the most important
2) Shaker - This is where you mix with ice or other liquors, etc.
3) Strainer - This is how you keep the ice in the shaker when you pour a drink into the glass
4) Blender - If anyone wants any frozen drinks
5) Bar Mat - To catch any runaway fluids
6) Bar spoon - Some drinks need to be stirred as opposed to shaken
7) Wine bottle opener
8) Beer bottle opener
9) "Rocks" glasses For drinks on the rocks
10) Wine glasses
11) Beer glasses
12) Tumblers - for drinks without ice
13) shot glasses
14) Garnishes - limes, lemons, cherries, olives, etc.
15) Jigger - This is how you measure how much of each liquor is going in
16) Pour Tops - Put these on top of the bottles to accurately poor shots

I'm sure there's more... not all of these are ESSENTIAL.

I reccomend picking up a copy of "Bartending for Dummies" it actually has quite a few very good lists for setting up a home bar. Other than that... here's your basic bartending equipment.

1 wine key
1 Small cocktail shaker
1 Large cocktail shaker
1 strainer (hawthorne strainers are best)
1 bar spoon
1 blender
1 ice bucket or sink for the ice
1 ice scoop
1 jigger or measuring glass
1 knife and cutting board for fruit
1 large water pitcher
1 muddler
stirrers and straws
large cups or bowls for garnishes

a set of bar glassware
shot glasses
cocktail or martini glasses
white wine glasses
red wine glasses
champagne glasses
rocks glasses
highball glasses
cordial glasses
snifters
Beer pints or pilsners

Sure it's respectable. I would never look down on a female or male bartender. They provide a service and it's no different than being a clerk in a store or a bank teller. It's a job and usually pays well so go for it:)

Bartenders' essential equipment? One big smile, outgoing attitude & knowing when someone is too drunk to drive. Other than that you need everything that people have listed before me...but don't forget barstools, cocktail napkins & munchies !! (& a restroom nearby could be very helpful)

Take care !

Even if I listed them for You You would still have to go and look them up. Save Yourself a lot of time and inconvenience, do a bar course, that way You will be able to impress Your guests with Your expertise.
