The 70 mph speed limit on motorways has been in force since December 1965. It was introduced as an illogical reaction to a series of multiple accidents in poor weather conditions. That such accidents occurred and continue to occur is not surprising, since drivers have never been offered effective training in judging speed and distance within the unique visual environment of a motorway.

A 70 mph speed limit imposed in good conditions could not and has not prevented these accidents. The report on the 70 mph 'experiment' attempted to justify its continuation but provided no valid evidence that accidents had reduced.

In the last 35 years, substantial improvements have been made in vehicle and highway engineering. Drivers have become much more accustomed to motorway driving, even though training is still inadequate. In 1965, 70 mph represented more than 80% of the maximum speed of average cars. Now it represents only 60%. The result is that 56% of car drivers exceed the motorway speed limit.

In the UK, the national speed limit was introduced as an experiment in late 1965, after a few crashes on stretches of motorway occured. before this (on motorways) there was no speed limit. IN 1967 the national speed limit of 70mph was officially introduced.

The UK conservative party is proposing a rise to 80mph, as drivers are thought to be used to driving at higehr speeds than they were in the 60s.

The only place in the British Isles to haev no speed limits on rural roads is on the Isle of Man, where they hold the Manx TT races.

Not sure why it has not been increased or decreased yet, but how often do you stick to 70 on the motorway? I think the police have a general rule, which I am almost certain is mirrored in automated speed cameras, where they will let you off doing up to and including 10% of the speed limit +3mph over.

So, in a 30mph , you can "get away" with 36;
40 - 47
50 - 58
60 - 69
70 - 80mph.

Don't take my word on that though, but it's what I've heard!

At least try to make your questions make sense.

The current Motorway Speed Limit is 70mph.
95% of drivers on motorways DON'T DO, the Speed Limit so why are you complaining about it?

If you want to drive at an insane speed the go use the Autobahn.
For you information before you do - the Autobahn is the ONLY piece of road in the World that has its own Air Ambulance service as well as Hospitals that treat ONLY those people injured on the Autobahn.

If the speed limit was decreased to, for instance, 60mph. The drivers would NOT change their speeds.
If the speed limit was increased to 80mph then the drivers would increase their average speed to around 95mph.

A 3 lane Motorway has an inside lane for speed restricted vehicles, a centre lane for vehicles travelling at 70mph and an outside lane for overtaking manoeuvres.

The next time YOU are on a Motorway, drive in the centre lane at 70mph and no higher and watch the irate drivers speeding past you!

back in the 1950s
more powerful cars and motorbikes
were in production
and too many fatalities
on motorways were happening
because of the speed they could reach and also lack
of safety measures in the design of these vehicles
people were now putting their foot down on the accelerator
and travelling at speeds they didnt have any former expierience
with handling a vehicle at,and crashing it.the police and road authorites decided enough was enough and introduced
a national speed limit for motorways,it could now be
a police and court issue if u were to speed and people
were less inclined to exceed the limit because of that reason.

' firecat ' - A 3 lane Motorway has an inside lane for speed restricted vehicles, a centre lane for vehicles travelling at 70mph and an outside lane for overtaking manoeuvres.

WRONG.

HGV's, PSV's, Caravans are restricted to using the two nearside lanes.
DON'T sit in the Middle lane - that's when you'll get a trucker tailgating you trying to get passed.
CENTER and OUTSIDE lanes are BOTH overtaking lanes.

If your nearside lane is empty, USE IT, and let others overtake safely.

NOTE; - The Government want to reduce the 70mph limit in an effort to reduce accidents - yet Motorways are the safest roads to travel on.
When an accident happens though, it's usually a fatality.

it has been increased already... about like 10-15 years ago not sure the federal speed limit was 55 but that was just stupid so it got raised and now its at like 70 or 75 like you said. it wont get raised again, because no one ever pays attention to speed limits anywyas, at least where im from (LA/SD area) people dont. flow of traffic is typically 5-15 mph over the speed limit and at night from like 9PM-4 or 5AM freeways go about 90-95 so yea... it wouldnt change much of anything
