Asking about local politics is a GREAT question that-if the officer will be honest-can glean some rather interesting answers. Such as, "If you busted a party where the Chief's/Mayor's/State Representative's underage daughter was caught drinking, how would you handle it".
Something else to ask (I confess-this is something I myself have to wondered about for a while now) would be: when dealing with traffic violations, how do they determine whether to issue a verbal or written warning or a full-fledged ticket? For example, why did guy A merely get a written warning for speeding 10 miles over the limit & for not wearing a seatbelt, while guy B did the exact same thing and was ticketed?
One other good one, in my opinion, would be to ask how they separate emotion from the job/not "take the job home" with them. For example, when they encounter a crime where small children are involved/hurt, or where something went wrong and someone got seriously injured or even killed as a result (like a robbery where police were on scene and the suspect shot someone anyhow).

i would ride with the police officers first, and you may find most of the answers you might have while watching them and how they handle their jobs. while on a break with them, snack or a meal, that will be a good time to ask them about their stress level, how they handle it on the job, and when not on the job, how they release their stress level... how many years they have been on the job, their goals [to be on patrol or step up to detective [and what area they would like to work] [ i do not think it is a good idea to chat much unless they start it up first]

Most importantly be sincere and respectful. don't argue with the officer or second guess what he/she does. keep in mind you will be with a professional who has been trained to do what he/she does. most of your questions will come to you as you watch the officer work. most of the questions i get asked are how to handle specific types of calls.of course people always want to hear the exciting or scary stories and that is fine to. just realize that 98% of the job is boredom and paperwork and 2% of pure terror and chaos. like i said be respectful and you'll be fine. oh yeah and have fun

What is your biggest fear?
What was your most exciting stop?
What do you find most rewarding aboug being an officer?
I think the best thing is to not act like a kid, don't tell your cop stories, and NEVER interfere with anything he does during a stop.

you can ask him if ever he had to fear for his life outside his job or because of his job. you can also ask if he has any remorse because a criminal was released after taking someone's life which led to another life stolen, or if he had to take a life. My cousin is a cop and he told me HIS feelings. I also had a friend who lost his job as a cop because he had to kill someone who refused to stop brutally raping a woman and was actually trying to kill her in front of the cop. They both felt very different about people after wards.

don't ask police questions, ask them of any funny stories, or jokes. Their job is hard to begin with. Ask for pointers on what kind of field you should go into, ask for a PBA card.
