I give 15 over before I stop and write unless working an area where citizens have made complaints then I drop it to 10 over.
The speed limit is the speed limit, you should be sticking very very close to that especially if you are going to be a be a new driver. You cannot control what the other drivers do on the road and increasing your speed will only increase your chance of a serious crash.
Do what your conscience and your driving record will allow.
Good luck and Godspeed

The part of the country that I live in is sparsely populated both by citizens and Police. The Police cruise through here every Tuesday morning just behind the mail truck and they are no nonsense no tolerance types (RCMP). Other than Tuesdays everyone just drives at whatever speed in comfortable for them. For some that is 50 MPH and for the more adventurous it is closer to a 100 MPH. I cruise at 80-85 MPH most days. Speed limit on the Trans Canada highway here is 70 MPG. Been driving 40+ years and I've never had a ticket.

In a residential neighborhood I would try to stay exactly at the speed limit and the same goes for school zones. On a highway, most officers will not pull over for any less than 10 mph over the speed limit, but it's not to say that they never will.
Honestly, the best thing you can do as a new driver is to stay within the speed limit and try to make it a rule to never go 10 over. If you go too fast it could be considered reckless driving which is more severe than a ticket. Good luck!!!!

Actually, it depends on the mood the officer is in at the time. Usually it is 5 mph or over the posted speed limit, but they can give you a ticket for anything above that posted speed limit (even for 1 mph over, which is usually very rare).

Generally 5 MPH over is the magic number but in some cases when there is a small town (dirty cops like in Southern Ohio) they will give you a ticket for going 1 MPH over and they will go out of their jurisdiction to give you that ticket.
They are so crooked that they have to screw their pants on in the mornings.

Most cops are looking for speeds that are hazardous but you can be ticketed for 1 mile over the limit. And sometimes, in bad weather, 5 miles over can be a hazard so just use your common sense while driving. Good luck.

Its at the officers discretion. Yes, most give you a 5mph allowance. But legally they dont have to. They can nail you for going 36 in a 35.
So dont push your luck. Although i do. I speed all the time.

Usually there is a grace of about 5, but I mean you could always run into that one cop who's having a bad day or a slow day lol, and decides that you were speeding.

You can get a ticket for 1mph over the speed limit.
35mph speed limit does not mean 40mph, nor is it a minimum speed limit, as most road pigs seem to think.

As a judge once told me "One mile over the limit, 15 miles over the speed limit dont matter you were speeding"
