That is true, the US Embassy or Consulate of your country will greatly assist you. Unfortunately there are only two legal ways to get a Permanent Resident card. If you have an immediate family member residing in the US as a citizen, he or she can file for you, as well as someone who is already a permanent resident, but only if they are your father, mother, or spouse.
The second option is through an employer. You could look into the visa categories and maybe come to the US to visit and find a prospective employer. If you find someone willing to employ you and petition, you can change your status to a work visa while in the US, and begin work. Later, your employer can petition for you to become a Permanent Resident.

Just a comment: British indigenous people should not need to apply for a 'green card' to work in the USA - US citizens seem to be able to come here and work freely - none of that business you can only work here if there is no British person to fill a vacancy [used to apply to US citizens] If I am wrong - please correct me.
