get the timing checked. new air filter and check the idle control valve. if thats caput. cowboys dont replace it. just turn the revs down. check this isnt the case.

The 16v model was introduced around 1986. Before that, all GTis were 8v. You can tell immediately when you lift the bonnet - the 16v engine has a flat-ish alloy top, with a blue VW badge and 16v lettering - the 8v engine has a much narrower top, and no blue lettering.

Just a thought...are you sure it's 16v...have you counted? If it's bought used the previous owner may have replaced it on the cheap

must be the valve timing ...16 valve engines have 2inlet and 2 outlet valves or may be some leaks on the rocker arms.

Does it have an automatic choke? Maybe it is stuck on?
