Okay I'm using the same speakers I used for my old computer (which was a xp/2000... long story) and it worked just fine. However, that one broke and now I have my sister friends old computer which is a xp. you can barely hear the speakers. I don't know what I did wrong. Any way to make it louder?

Some speakers have a built in amplifier and others have an amplifier outside. Did you maybe miss getting an outside amp? That would leave your speakers being driven by the computer's audio card. Some speakers have been made so the amp could be used optionally -- you could drive the speakers with the audio card and turn off the amp. Also, you might've been using the line out with amplified speakers instead of the speaker output. Now, if you don't have amplified speakers, you won't hear them hardly at all.

So--look carefully at the plug where the speakers go and make sure it's the speaker output and not the line output. Make sure you have all of the parts for the speaker system and that you're not missing the amplifier. Make sure that the speaker amplifier is plugged in, turned on, and connected to the speakers correctly. Test the amp by turning just the amp and nothing else on then off. You should hear the speakers make a sound -- if not, maybe the amp is dead.

It maybe that your have the sound turned down on the PC and not on the speakers.

Go into control panel and have a look for a 'Sound' icon. There should be an option somewhere to increase the sound of the PC.
