The city of Sodam and Gemorah were running rampant with sin and God was about to cast judgement on them but He allowed Lot and his wife to leave with the instructions not to look back as judgement was taking place. Lot's wife looked back and she was immediately turned to a pillar of salt.

Lot's wife. Lot was Abraham's nephew I think. He went to live in Sodom, and he was the only righteous person there, so God sent two male angels to save him from his home, because God was going to destroy Sodom. The entire town of Sodom came to Lot's door and wanted to rape the angels, and God struck the town blind so that Lot could get away. Sodom was destroyed after Lot left and so was his wife as you said, the entire story of Sodom and Gomorrah is in Genesis, it's a very interesting story, I think I've heard that Sodom and Gomorrah are supposedly at the bottom of the Dead Sea today. Lot wasn't a great man, but God can do anything with those who are obedient to him.
