American law is based on many different legal codes in the world, dating back to Roman time, however the laws we use today are mostly based on Common Law statutes that originated in England.

The source of the american law comes from the english system of law. Also, it depends upon where you live, if it is english common law that you live under or a civil law that you live under. Parts of California, texas have civil law, while Lousiana bases their law system upon civil law. But all of the states except for Louisana have english common law as it basis.
