I left this employer not on good terms and I feel they are trying to add income to the 1099 that was left from the previous year. Is there specific documentation i can request?

Ask for the check register for your account or a list of payments and dates.

First, check with the bookkeeper, it may be a simple error. Ask for verification in a letter. You do have free service available from the IRS., via their Resolution Dept. Ask your bank for a copy of your deposits,
Try and get this corrected prior to spending money for legal services which you may not need. Most things can be explained without an argument, so your reasons for leaving will not affect the financial records. Best wishes.

You can prove that if you kept accurate records of all of their payments. If you didn't keep proper records, you're probably out of luck.

You can ask for proof of all of the payments -- copies of canceled checks, for example. If they refuse you'll probably need to consult with an attorney about getting a subpoena of their financial records. Since you'll have to pay all of the costs for that, you should weigh the potential benefit against the cost of pursuing the case.

Unless you kept your own records, or can get copies of all your bank deposits from that year, you may be out of luck if they are being hostile.

Your final pay stub for the year should have the correct information.
