I'd vote for a Mac, as they have better video capabilities. Plus, I've got Vista Ultimate installed and am having a lot of problems related to video editing. The Divx codec apparently isn't Vista-compliant and the combination of Vista and Divx has resulted in over 100 errors on my computer. Also, I was able to install my Pinnacle Studio 10 under Vista, but it won't run. I checked and Pinnacle says they plan to have a patch at some point in March, but I'm not holding my breath. I've got a PC that's one year old and has 2GB of RAM, and I have to close almost every other app when I burn and encode DVDs because otherwise the DVD burning app (built-in) crashes. When trying to use VLC I have to turn on hardware support to get a picture, which places a lot of the burden for graphic on the video card and slows it down.
Obviously my Vista experience hasn't been positive. On the other hand, I've had no problems with the iLife suite on my husband's G4 (although it doesn't allow you to import avi files, which is annoying - third party software should help with that).
If I were shopping for a computer to do video work, I'd definitely buy a Mac at this point. Vista might improve in a year or so, but it's had to know if that will happen or not.

Mac OS X is the industry standard in video work. Microsoft Windows is mainly used for games and to run Microsoft Office. Microsoft Windows Vista (£320) is also about 300% more expensive than Mac OS X (£75).

If you want to do video editing, I would highly recommend the Mac. Well, I would recommend the Mac for anything. You will spend less money on Vista, but you really do get what you pay for. I absolutely love my Mac, and so does anyone who sees it in action. It's just a great machine. iMovie HD is a great video editing application for amateurs. If you're a pro, nothing beats Apple's pro line of applications. Macs come with most of the software you'll need, right out of the box. You won't be worrying about malware, so you'll have more time to focus on your video projects. Trust me, you'll love it. If you have any specific questions about the Mac platform, just send me a message. I'm always glad to help.

If you get Vista you will be kicking yourself for it. When XP came out it was buggy as well, so if you must get Vista, wait awhile.
I have both a Windows XP PC and a Mac. I prefer the Mac. Once you acquaint yourself with Macs and OSX, you will wonder why you ever bothered with Windows.

Wait till spring because Mac has a new OS coming out called Leopard. Go to the Apple site and check it out. It will blow you away. http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/index.html. Vista sucks. Also remember that Mac has no virus while windows still has a bunch of viruses.

if you're purchasing now, get a mac.
if you want to wait a year, MAYBE get Vista.
As of right now, Vista has a lot of bugs, and microsoft is slow in the bug-fixing department.
