Because they don't get paid as much and it is always about the mighty $$$$$$$ to them !

My doctor is in second year of residency. Yes I have medicaid, the clinic I go to is in the bronx and the people there are wonderful. They're polite, well spoken and helpful. Every time I go to the doctor I have to wait for a little while, then I'm seen by the nurses, only one of them is super nice, she's Chinese I think. The other nurses are ok, but I don't think that has anything to do with medicaid, it's just the way they are. Then I'm put into a waiting room until my doctor comes. He's very Professional and answers all of my annoying questions, all 50 of them if I have them. He then later tells me he needs to go over our meeting with his superior which I'm assuming is a higher ranking doctor. Then he comes back and tells me if all is well. I like my doctor, never did I feel mistreated in any way. I know he's only a resident, but you wouldn't be able to tell unless he told you.

One of the main reasons people are treated badly is because medicaid is a government run program. The government dictates how much a doc will get paid for an office visit or anything else. The average medicaid patient will only generate about 1/3 of the income as a private patient. Many docs will triple book medicaid pts in order to break even. Then, after they have seen those 3 patients sometimes the state will jerk him around for the payment of claims. They ask for return documents and hold up payment. Sometimes they don't even acknowledge the claims. It ends up costing the doc more money just to fight so they give up and write it off. It is really sad but that is how government agencies function. Some doctors are really rude to thier patients but not all of them. Ask around in your neighborhood if there is a good office that someone knows about. In my office all patients are treated with respect and kindness. No exceptions. I have never had a complaint about bad treatment from any of our patients. I realize we are an exception but there are more of us out there. Hope you find someone really good!

Unfortunately, rules and regulations often interfere with what a doctor can do for you. There are many kind and caring doctors out there, limited by that. On the other hand, you can find med. professionals who do look down at you, but I have never worked with one. If you go to the ER, they will triage you just as they would anyone else. Depending on the coverage you get, they may be limited in what they can do for you, but it is definitely better than not having any type of coverage, because the hospital doesn't want to assume financial responsibility. If you see a private practitioner who sees only medicaid patients, then you may have to wait awhile in his waiting room, but his care shouldn't be anything but good.

They're NOT supposed to! It's ironic I would see this question today, because we're covering insurance in this medical course I'm taking and we started learning Medicaid today. I just read in my Insurance Handbook (by Fordney) that Medicaid patients should be treated as respectfully as any other patient. The problem is that when they're not, the Medicaid person is afraid to report them because they think they'll lose their benefits. Sad. Shame on those providers or their staff that act like that! You may want to ask the Department of Welfare or the Medicaid people what remedies may be available.

They get angry because they don't get paid as much. Also, they assume that many of the people on medicaid are lazy and can be working, but don't work. In some cases that may be true, but there's no way a doctor knows this by looking at you and they shouldn't judge you that way. Some people are on it for good reason. It's a shame that those who do not need it are on it, as they ruin it for those who have the need.

I am not on medicaid but I have experienced the same bad treatment from doctors and hospital people. I do not think it is as much that you are poor as that people are just self-centered jerks with no compassion for people's feelings.

Because it is acceptable!

My son has seizures. My ex never stuck around nor pays child support. Anyhoo his legs did not work one day and he fell. This caused a fractured collar bone. He screamed!! Stress on body can cause another seizure. I took him into the children's hospital where he was being seen.
They said it was nothing and made us wait 4 hours I think it was. They kept telling me my kid was complaining for attention. I told them my kid is not like that and can tolerate pain and would not say it hurts if it did not hurt.
I finally lost my cool! I try real hard to control my temper. Started telling them rather loudly they will get a ex ray of my kids collar bone and to talk with his neurologist who is in that ward of the hospital. I think they forgot about us myself.
Sure enough my kid had to wear a huge braise for weeks. The feela who was so nasty about making us wait did apologize. My son was very soar and would not let anyone touch that spot for years! He was 4 at the time I think?
My son is also autistic.

They treat people like this cause they can....

Because they aren't going to make any money off you. Many people have the illusion that hospitals are supposed to care for you and your health because you are a human being and your life is just as important as everyone else's, but the truth is that a hospital is a business just like the phone company or Wal-Mart or the airlines and it wants/needs to make money to pay for all its state-of-the-art equipment and the salaries of all the doctors and nurses and gift shop ladies. My boss once had cancer ... a very treatable form of cancer and he was did very well. At one point in his treatment, he asked his doctor what happened to the people who had his type of cancer but didn't have insurance. The doctor replied, "They die."

Because they fell that most of us have had medicaid all our lives and just feel that most of us are just using the system and there are ones that do, but truth of the matter is some of us don't have the best jobs and can't afford their blue cross and blue shield. They just assume you are one of the lazy ones who's using the system for the governments help!!

Sometimes, people who work hard for their money assume that if you are on medicaid that you refuse to work and support yourself. This sometimes makes the people who work hard for their money angry, because they feel like they are working to pay for other people who refuse to work. This can be upsetting for the people who work hard for their money and so they get a bad attitude and sometimes take it out on the people on medicaid.
