When microsoft creates a OS setup CD, it is usually created in batches. one batch of CDs will have set of Product keys.

If your friend's CD is of same version of yours, like windows XP professional with SP2 shall not work with an activation code for Windows XP Home or Professional (without SP2) or media center edition.

Also if the both are of same version, you could use the same CD. You may use any CD within version limts, and the problem is only with the product key. You are licensed for the product key.

I have tried the same when i install XP for my friends.

Yes. The cd keys are simply a verification code that specify any limitations in your installation. For example, if you are installing a beta or trial version of Windows or another program, the cd key "tells" the setup program to install certain information ONLY, not the entire package. You shouldn't run into any problems so long as you have an XP code and your friends cd is an XP disc.

There is usually a sticker on the side or the top of the computer with the product code on it. If you mean you have already installed windows and to to activate, then you can just do that through the internet or call microsoft.

Yes, it will not work. The orginal key is stuck with the CD it came with.
