I cannot speak for other countries but in the U.S. all church donations are completely voluntary.

Everything I have is a gift from God and I freely choose to give back some of my time, talent, and treasure.

With love in Christ.

Different Christian churches have different requirements or recommendations concerning Tithing. It is not a tax, but goes back in the Old Testament to an honest, heartfelt ten percent of the best of what one has. Cain killed Abel because he thought Abel's offering was bettrer than his own.
The Catholic church did at one time have penances, where they strong-armed people into paying money to get their dead relatives out of purgatory.

I think there are confused people out there that think tithing and taxing are the same.

Tithe: A portion of one’s earnings, usually one tenth, that are given to those who perform the work of the Lord since it belongs to the Lord (Lev. 27:30-33). Those who received tithes the OT consisted of priests (Num. 18:21-32). Further OT references are Gen. 14:20; 28:22; 2 Chron. 31:5f; Mal. 3:7-12).

In the NT there is no command to tithe a tenth (since we are not under law but grace). But the tithe is mentioned in Luke 18:9-14; 1 Cor. 16:1; 2 Cor. 8).

In a way, you could say that the church "taxes" people, although I think it's more voluntary than that. Members of the Catholic church are expected to pay an annual tithe of 10% of their annual income.

That's a new one for me.

To clarify - the Catholic Church asks people to donate as they can given their personal situations. These donations can be considered to be in three categories: TIME, TALENT, and TREASURE. 10% is a suggestion, not a requirement.
