I think you need to look a variety of things to help solve this problem.

1. Is it happening at the same time every night? If so, your child has probably gotten into a habit and its not really tied to anything else. Letting them self-soothe back to sleep can help break the habit in as little as 3 days.

2. Is the child eating in the middle of the night? It's probably not nutritionally necessary for an 18 month old to still be eating in the middle of the night, try to wean him/her off this habit by offering just a drink of water, and then encouraging the child to go back to sleep.

3. How is he/she sleeping the rest of the day. An 18 month old still needs 11-14 hours of sleep per day, including naps and nighttime sleep. A child that's not getting enough sleep with paradoxically have a harder time sleeping, even when they are tired.

Personally, I believe it's the individual. My 6 year old son slept through the night at 6 weeks. My 3 year old son still wakes up at night for no apparent reason. He never slept more than 5 hours straight until he was 9 months old. Sometimes he just gets up, comes to my room, says I love you Mommy, and goes back to bed, other nights he's wide awake at 3 a.m. and it takes a little effort to get him back to bed.

Also don't stress, each child sleeps through the night in their own time. My daughter took till she was 2.
