most smokers start because of a kind of pressure, whether from peers or from problems, it usually presents the victim with a good thing about smoking, like it's easing of the nerves.

nicotine addicts people by basically holding the nerves hostage by interrupting the field of static that it uses to communicate, it is addicting because after you stop smoking it can be uncomfortable since you are so used to the nicotine being there, so it is really hard to adjust and recover without the urge to do so again so that the nerve's will feel better again.

I started smoking when I was 14 (in the 80's) because I thought it was really "cool".
I kept smoking because while I was busy being "cool" I was also becoming addicted to nicotene and the bad effects of smoking were so gradual that I didn't notice; I thought I'd be 50 or 60 by the time smoking actually had a bad effect.
Now, it's an addiction AND a habit...a very comfortable habit, unfortunately.

well I'm not sure why other people started, but I was working at a very semi-stressful job and that helped calm me down if I was feeling particularly jittery. Pretty soon I was hooked. I've tried at least a dozen different times to quit but could never stick with it. Luckily I just recently quit, because I'm more worried about my health more than anything and I don't want anything to happen to me to leave me 2 kids motherless. Plus it's great not always smelling like smoke, you can also smell and taste things a whole lot more and better.

Trying to be cool is part of the reason. Also I simply quite like it. I don't think that's necessarilly the main problem though. I think a big part of the problem is, when you start, you might start only smoking occassionally, and it doesn't seem that hard to quit.

When you're young I reckon you don't see what you do now as having anything to do with what you're gonna be like when you're older. You just figure you will quit before it's too late. A lot of people do smoke as teens and succesfully quit soon after when they realise it's stupid, but if you carry on much after that, it can be too late to easily quit.

Despite the health effects, once you get used to the taste smoking is enjoyable and it offers something to do when you're not doing anything for the chronic fidgeter. It's the negative health effects, as well as the smell, cost and penchant for cigarettes to stain teeth and fingers that drives people to quit.

If your question is why do people do things that they know is unhealthy for them? Then I don't know the answer to that, people do alot of stupid things.
