I've got a 3 month year old puppy and I’ve had her for two weeks and she's growing pretty fast and so her toe nails are growing very long. When I’m handling or playing with her nails are cutting my skin like a razor blade she's literally making me start to bleed. ?Also I’m not sure what types of breed of dog she is, I was told when I bought her from a pet shop she’s cross Yorkshire terrier but she doesn’t seem to be like a Yorkshire terrier. So can someone please tell me if there’s any other way of telling what size she could grow .
Thanks Kara

I picked her up and did'nt want to put the her down so I ended up taking her home. It does'nt bother me what differant breeds she is I was just wondering if there was anyway of telling what size she could grow.

There's no way to tell how big she will be if you don't know what she was crossed with.
As for her nails, you only need to cut them every 2-4 weeks. The "quick" of the nail is that part that is still "alive," and contains both nerves and blood supply. Push your pups nails out. You will see a pinkish line. This is the quick, don't cut this. If you can't see the quick because your pet's nails are too dark, only cut the hook end. I know this is hard to visualize, so here is a website with an illustration, just scroll to the bottom of the page:

If your dog is small, human clippers are alright (I use these on my cats), but if the nails are thick, you should buy a clipper from a drug store (you can probably get them online, as well). If you are nervous or unsure, just ask your vet or a nurse to show you the next time you bring your pup in. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help.
Good luck.

If you can afford weekly trips to a groomer then do so! BUT, generally you can get nice nail-clippers for dogs at any good pet-store. DONT CUT THE ANILS ALL THE WAY!!!! No matter what anyone says this is BAD BAD BAD! If you hold her paws up you should see a little red lin. This is the vein called the "quick". Cut to a little ways before the end of the quick. If you vut the nail too short then add either actual powder made for clotting the blood flow or normal baking flour will do as well. Hope I helped :)

Okay HOLD IT! Put down the DOG nail clippers! For a puppy you need toe nail clippers. (human ones)

When you cut make sure not to cut the quick or it will bleed. (if this accidentally does happen but antibacterial medicine and corn starch on it)

The quick is the pink part of the nail and if your dog has black toe nails you just want to cut the very tips. Do NOT cut into the curves.

You can also have your vet do this.

hey there!

post a link with a picture of ur dog, and we'll take a look at it and give u our opinion on the breed!

ok, so u need 'dog clips'. do not attempt to use human nail clippers or scissors to trim nails as this can split the dogs nails and be very painful. you can pick up some special dog nail clippers at a pet store or animal supply store.

ok, how to clip: sit ur dog comfortably, take her paw in ur hand and press ur thumb in between her "fingers" so they spread out take the clippers, and place over the nail.

(inside her nail you will see a quick running through the center of the nail. it just looks like long skin inside her nail. DO NOT cut this, it is painful for the dog and will bleed)

as u r placing the clippers over the nail, and above this quick, squeeze and the tip of the nail will come off.

this can be quite daunting to do for the first time as ur pup may squirm and u may be afraid to hurt her. if u think it is too much for u to do, take her to a groomer or vet who will be more than happy to do it for u for free or for a small fee.

good luck with her! =)

Yorkie mix...small dog...small nails.

This is the perfect opportunity to teach you how to cut a puppy's toe nails...get regular people fingernail clippers...sit on the ground...hold your puppy with her back to you...take on of her paws...pull the hair away from her nails (holding it with your had that is holding the paw)...her nails are probably black...if white you will be able to see the pink "quick"...look at the toenail...see how it looks like a hook? You are safe to cut the "hook" off...don't cut into the toe, just the hook...cut the "hook" a little long if you are not sure, then take a human hail file (the large kind like a nail salon would use)...buff the nail...do this on every nail.

Good Luck....I don't care where you got your puppy...Just love her and spoil her rotten!

Edit: You can only see the "quick" in white toenails...black toenails, you can not.

You don't say what your dog is a cross yorkie with so hard to guess what you have...probably a yorki-poo or a morki...cross with poo dle or m altese so should remain small. Cutting the nails...take your pup to a groomer and have them do it and show you how to maintain them or just go about every 2 -3 weeks...their nails do not need to be done every week...they wear a bit whilst running around and they just don't normally grow that fast! So find out what the other mix of your dog is, look it up on t he net and go to the groomer's ASAP enjoy your new baby!

As far as the nails go they have doggie nail clippers to use but i would ask the vet to help with the clipping. With the size of your dog Look at her paws, they usually help tell how big a dog will be. If her paws look huge then she'll be a big dog but if they are medium to small the she'll probably be a medium sized dog.
Hope this helps!

If she yorkie cross she would only be a small dog.

To clip nails get her to lie down. pat her, have a second person to help you keep her calm. You may have to do it four times to finish it. If she hops up just stop and wait until you have her relaxed again.

what dose she look like. Silky and Australian Terriera look simalar to yorkie as puppies and are only a little bit bigger.

At pet stores they have toe nail clippers and they fit your dogs toe nail shape.
