The half-life of lidocaine (the most common "novacaine" used in dentistry) is only 1.5-2 hours. This means half will be excreted in the urine after about 2 hours. Another half in another 2 hours, etc., so it is gone pretty quickly.

Some people ask this question when they are about to take a drug test. Injectable local anesthetics will not give a positive reaction that would be mistaken for cocaine. First of all they dont use novacaine anymore. It is other anesthesias. They can last for a few hours but in rare conditions some people can suffer permanent numbness.
