If you didnt go to court you werent charged with anything, therefore there isnt any record of it. You were lucky.

I was a probation officer for over 27 years in New York. You don't have a record, what happened when you were 14 was as a juvenile. There would be no public record. But in your case, it appears that you were never charged with petit larceny, otherwise you would have gone to family court. The case could have been what is called "adjusted" where the store agreed not to prosecute you. Go ahead and apply for the job, you can honestly say you were never arrested. Hopefully, you learned a lesson about how a mistake like shoplifting can hurt your future. I think you understand that, and that is a good step to growing up.

I know that your Juvenile record is erased once you reach legal age, but I'm not sure about 16. The fact that you were not convicted, is a plus, and maybe the arrest might be forgiven since you were only 14 when it happened. I think I would ask an attorney to be sure, or call your Legal Aid Society.

You were never convicted. The application probably says "have you ever been convicted of a crime?" and since you never went before a judge or anything it sounds like you had charged dropped. So, youre off the hook. Go apply for that job!

I don't know what the law is in New York, but if you didn't have a trial then you weren't convicted. You could always pick up a crime report to see if it shows up on your criminal background... you can get those at most police stations around the state.

Don't worry about it you're a juvenile and your records will be sealed. Just don't take any more cues form Winona and you'll be fine.
Good luck with the job!

It depends what state you are in, but when it is your first time getting caught doing something illegal it doesn't go on your record. I know because i got caught shop lifting also.

You should not have a record if you weren't tried and convicted. Sounds like it wasn't too serious anyway.
