So my family finally booked an Alaska cruise for this summer...Yay! Anyway, we are very interested in the Husky Dog Sled Camps and possibly combo/seperate glacier viewing helicopter ride (if we can afford it). I noticed that both Juneau and Skagway offer similar excursions. Pricing is about the same (I noticed the Dog Sled camp is a little cheaper per person for Skagway though).
Just curious if anyone would recommend one over the other for the glacier helicopter ride and/or Dog Sled Camp...or is it perhaps over-hyped? Thanks a bunch.

The glacier helicopter tour is amazing. I highly recommend that, it is well worth money. In my opinion, I would go for that over the dog sled, but both are great.

As far as which dog sled to do, both will be similar it just depends on the scenary around you. So, I would go for the one that can save you a little money.

The other excursion I highly recommend is the rail tours. They are really great as well, very popular for Alaska cruises.

We took an Alaska cruise the summer of 2005 and signed up for the Skagway dog sled. Unfortunately, the day we were to go, they said the weather was too bad and offered us the glacier helicopter ride instead. So I can't compare them. But I can say that the Glacier helicopter was one of the high points of the trip. The ride and the scenery were spectacular. Walking around the glacier and listening to the explanation was fun and interesting. I recommend it if you can afford it. Its surely not cheap.

We went to Alaska in August 2006. The dog musher camp in Skagway was pretty good. We met one of several musher's who train for the Iditarod. Musher's even take you on an actual mush ride with their dogs-in-training. At the very end, there is of course "puppy" time with the new family members. It is worth the excursion just to get an ideal look into the world of musher's and the Iditarod. Have fun!
