True. Tiger is playing a bunch of cupcakes compared to Jack's competition. Ask this question--how many of Tiger's foes would be considered in the top twenty golfers of all time? ZERO. Jack's foes included the likes of Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd, Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and on and on...He pounded them all into submission. And believe me they would never have allowed Jack to win a major guiding the ball into the fairway with irons from the tee (see last year's British Open). His competition wanted to win, not just get the big 4th place check. It's not Tiger's fault and Tiger might beat Jack in his prime--might--but Jack came out on top when Golf had its heydey of stars. Lefty, Vijay, Furyk, Els? They back up in fear of losing to Tiger. Do you think they would ever present him with a snake on the first tee ala The Merry Mex. Do you think they would go toe to toe--65,65--ala Watson. They are close in their greatness but their competition is miles apart.

Jack had some great competitors, true, but there were only a handful. Tiger, on the other hand, faces a field of some 100 or more players every time he tees up, all of whom can hit the ball nearly 300 yards, and have played years of competitive golf through university, and various professional tours worldwide, before joining the PGA tour. Tiger just keeps raising the bar. I think Jack would agree with this.

I think the competition today is far better. Not only does Tiger have to face the best America has to offer, but Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa (think Ernie Els). Golfers are better conditioned and the huge sums for prize money has made it very lucrative. Jack was a great player; Tiger is a great player. But the competition is better now.

true and false. There were probably a better 3-4 top people jack played with. But now the bottom of the pack is more solid than when jack played.

It is probably even. The real question would be if they play to win today or not. They didn't make alot of money back then, so winning was everything. Most of the guys now seem content to just finish in the money so I think the calaber of player today is deceiving because of the money they make. 20 years ago only 1 player made $1M on the money list..last year, there were 93!

True, plus back in Jack's time they didn't have space-age technology used in golf clubs today.
