I'm on the high school varsity track team, so I run and workout everyday. I also take really hard classes, so I'm exhausted everyday in school. But somehow, when it comes to bedtime (around 11pm - 12am) I can't fall asleep. What should I do?

Start reading a boring book, this works for me every-time, I suffer from depression and also find my mind racing in all directions before I fall a sleep. It is like me brain is trying to file everything that happen that day. But most days something I hear or learn something and my brain cannot find a place to file it. So I try to put on the back burner to figure out where it goes.

First, you need to 'do your homework' somewhere that is 'not in your bedroom.' Second, you need to not do any 'exercises' for at least two hours before you go to bed. Third, you need to use your bed for only TWO things ... sleep and ... well, you shouldn't be doing that, anyway, so really ALL you should EVER use your bed for is to sleep. Do not drink ANYTHING with 'caffeine' in it (including 'cola' drinks and many teas) after 4:00 p.m. and try drinking a 'soothing herbal tea' like 'Sleepy Time' or 'Get some ZZZZs' a half an hour before you go to bed. Then try a little 'meditation' to 'empty your mind' so that you can go to sleep more easily. If this does NOT help you to fall asleep more easily, then I would tell you that you need to 'talk to a doctor' about it. And when you have 'fallen asleep' it's best if the room is 'as quiet as possible' and as 'dark' as possible, and if you need to get up and go the the bathroom in the 'middle of the night' do it in 'the dark' (no more than the 'dimmest' night light) ... so you'll stay 'closer to sleep' than you could if you turned the lights on. In high school, you really need to get at least 9 hours of sleep every night, so your 'exhaustion' during school hours probably comes from you not getting 'enough' sleep and not because you find 'falling asleep difficult' ...

Drink a cup of hot tea. I used to hate hot tea but when I was pregnant I wanted it for some reason and it helped relax me. Start a routine where every night at a certain time you drink a cup of hot tea ALONE and read US weekly before you go to bed. Try it for a couple of days--- hope it works!

Go to your local organic pharmacy or just anywhere where they sell teas and herbs. You can find teas that help you sleep at night or that will make you drowsy. Just try to relax and drink some good herbal teas!

don't eat or drink anything a couple of hours before bed, start trying to relax at least half an hour before bed (try breathing exercises or meditation), keep your bedroom cool and dark

what also works for me personally is when I'm lying in bed, I start at my toes and work on relaxing one body part at a time.....I never make it too far before I'm out......

clear you mind and forget about all that stuff
its hard to clear your mind though so you might want to visualize something like a candle flame and keep just that image in your head
also, when you first lay down, lay flat on your back and slowly "stretch" every muscle in you body starting with your toes then let yourself completely relax
