Aren't both good?

Grace - Good from God that nobody deserves. Examples: Freedom from an ugly past lifestyle, new reasons to live, eagerly looking forward to living forever.

Virtue - The combined results of grace, upbringing, human effort .... Examples would be politeness, manners, reputation

Wouldn't it be exhausting to just work at virtue without the benefit of grace?

Well, since it's impossible to live by virtue, the only possible answer is to live by grace. If God is who He claims to be, then His holiness is infinite. A single lie, a single envious or lustful thought, a single sin of any kind no matter how minor, would be enough to separate us from Him by a gulf so infinitely wide that it could never be bridged. The infinite purity of the standard of virtue makes it impossible for us to ever be virtuous in our own right. So we have to depend on grace.

Virtue is basically a "good habit". Grace, on the other hand, is power from God, freely given by Him. You probably need grace to help you cultivate virtues, and to stay virtuous helps you obtain graces. The two are intertwined, but not necessarily dependent on the other. You need both.

The only way I can have virtue, is through the grace of YHVH. I have no virtue on my own, and cannot make it. Only He can bring a clean thing out of an unclean thing!
