They're called 'varmint rifles' in some areas because of suitability for shooting squirrels and other small critters. Anything larger than a woodchuck or a medium size armadillo would be difficult to take down with one shot. On the other end of the scale, most small songbirds are hard to target effectively, making bird shot a better option. Even larger birds tend to move too fast to draw a good bead on.
So, of common North American animals: rabbits, woodchucks, possum, squirrels, large rats, skunks, smaller raccoons, armadillo, foxes, and muskrat (among others). A coyote *might* be viable if you can get a good first shot - because you won't get a second one.

Small game and varmints. Be careful squirrel hunting however. you will have to aim "up" to shoot a squirrel and even if you them the bullet has a good chance of passing on through the squirrel and continuing on to who know where. That bullet will have to come down some place so be sure it is not on a house, or passing car or someones livestock.

Varmits and small game... pretty much anything smaller than a coyote would be acceptable. Don't even try to shoot a medium or large animal with a .22. You'll either wound it and it will get away, or you'll piss it off and it will come at you.

Squirrel, rabbits, small caliber game for a small caliber round. It is illegal to shoot anything larger in most states. Contact the hunting/gaming commission in your area. Try not to shoot anything ,though!

Rabbits, squirrels, cats, rats, groundhogs (or woodchucks, whistle pigs, whatever you might call them).
BUT NO SONGBIRDS! Shoot all the starlings you see! Starlings eat ALL the food other birds need, they raid other bird's nests and eat the eggs and young, and attack smaller birds. They are why there aren't as many songbirds anymore.
