I dont like to lie (not very good at it), BUT, if someone told me to swear on the bible or swear to God, it wouldn't bother me.

What do they think swearing on the bible's going to prove anyway? I just dont get it. The same as swearing to God, someone will ask me to swear to God - I tell the truth but if i was to lie i could swear to God and lie!

Christians do you find it sacreligious if people ask you to swear to God?

In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus admonishes people not to take oaths on anything, not God or the Temple or even the hair on your head. (Of course it doesn't say anything about Bibles.) The point is, you don't really have control over any of these things. It's just superstitition, designed to intimidate people into taking the proceedings seriously. Anyone who intends to lie even after swearing "on" a Bible isn't going to be afraid of a thunderbolt from God. But if you violate even the silliest tradition, people will talk.

The idea is that if you swear on something you believe in with all your heart, the odds are it will be the truth. Swearing to God means that "with God as your witness, it's true". I only find it sacrilegious if it's actually a lie.

xtians feel if you lie swearing on the bible, then you're lying to god. So even if you get away with your lie here on earth, if you still get to Heaven God will give you a good spanking for being such a naughty girl! (actually God is into that)

Ok swearing on the bible or on anything else is Truly not needed.
One is taught NOT to do this because it implies that one's given word is not reliable, so then oaths and swears are given.
An honest man need not make any oaths or swear upon anything because his word is Truth already.

In united statesa. we've freedom of religion. So no person is forced to embody any faith they have not got self assurance in. might desire to you request it, you will possibly be sworn in on the Koran. Or in the adventure that your particular Holy e book weren't obtainable, say you belonged to an exceedingly imprecise faith, you're able to simlpy be asked to substantiate your oath with out putting your hand upon the logo of a faith you do not help. In united statesa. the Bible is often used simply by fact maximum individuals of its human beings are Christian or come from Christian families and have not have been given any objection to the Bible. however the choice to refuse is often obtainable. And curiously, non secular Christians refuse to swear oaths besides simply by fact's forbidden by scripture. consequently in courtroom you're asked to "swear or verify" your testimony. Mathew 5:33-37 33Again, you have heard that it grew to become into stated to the folk previously, 'do not ruin your oath, yet save the oaths you have made to the Lord.' 34But I inform you, do not swear in any respect: the two by heaven, for that's God's throne; 35or by the earth, for that's his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the super King. 36And do not swear by your head, for you are able to not make even one hair white or black. 37Simply permit your 'sure' be 'sure,' and your 'No,' 'No'; something previous this comes from the evil one

I think that in courtroom situations, it is good to swear to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth," on the Bible because if you don't use the Bible to determine what is right from wrong, then what will make you know or do what is right?

It is an ancient superstition held by much of churchianity that somehow "swearing on the Bible" is more certain. Maybe they think the Almighty will strike you dead if you lie. How far we have departed from "the faith delivered to the saints"!

Old blue, scripture says we are not to swear by or on anything. Not the sun, the moon, or the stars. But most of all we are not to swear to God. Instead we are to just let our yeses mean yes and our no,s mean no. anything more than that is from Satan. What I just said is virtually a quote. Sacrilegious? ,,,,,, welllll it is of course forgivable , but I wouldn't practice it!! swindled

Back in the old days I learned that you shouldn't swear on anything that you don't own and since you don't own anything, since even your life belongs to God you can't even swear on your life.

I believe I read it in the Bible.

Anyway. I don't believe in gods and whatnot but I still don't see the sense in swearing on anything. I live the way they lived back in the old days. By virtue.
