Why is your way of thinking so much better? You are acting like they are all bad because you know one that is mean. It is no different than something thinking they are nice dogs because they know a nice pit bull. Your way of thinking is not different. Do you have scientific proof that all Staffies are vicious. Do you have proof that all Staffies are more likely to bite that say Cocker Spaniels, Labs, Golden Retrievers, etc. The only thing your question really presents is that you believe your ideas of dogs are more superior to everyone else's opinions which I believe is having a superiority complex...many people seek professional help for this.

Here is a company that has conducted extensive research on behavior matters. http://www.atts.org/stats1.html Look through and see what dogs are more likely to have aggression problems than American Pit Bulls and American Staffordshire Terriers. The first column shows how many were tested, second is how many passed the assessment, how many failed, then the percentage that passes.

Put it this way i do voluntary work in Dogs Trust, and they must have at least 5 staffies in there at the moment, and i was suprised at how loving and playful they are. None of them have shown any aggression towards me despite having had bad backgrounds. Well its true all dog owners love their dogs and think they are good dogs. But as the story goes, it really does depend on how the dog is brought up. Think of the reasons why dogs attack? Am sure they don't do it just for the sheer pleasure of it. Rememember a dog's only defence is their mouth. Unprovoked attacks? Well a dog could even be threatened just by you walking past, its not your fault obviously it is just the background of the dog.
My advice would be not to approach any strange dog, and unexpected attacks where as the dog runs out of no where after you, then I blame the owners. It is their responsibility to keep the dog away from public who he/she may harm. Responible owners = good dogs no matter what breed.
I'm sorry that you have had bad experiances with Staffies, but I wouldn't say it was fair to label the rest of them.

ok for starters I highly agree with "bad owners, not bad dog" I have a purebred staffie who we rescued. She was abused and neglected and she is a very sweet dog. I trust her with my kids more than I trust my "mutt". They can crawl all over her, put there hands by her mouth when she's eating, take things out of her mouth if they are playing and she doesn't show any signs of aggression.

People who own an "aggressive" breed shouldn't have it if they aren't experienced dog owners or don't know about the breed.

Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner or handler most often is responsible for making a dog into something dangerous.
An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of a Pomeranian that killed an infant
Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be potentially dangerous. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack.

I was attacked by a Golden Retriever when I was about 4, and the Golden Retriever is looked upon as a loving, loyal family dog. My fiance was attacked at a young age by a Spaniel, yet another "family" dog.

In the right hands the Staffie is a lovely dog! Any dog is if reared and trained properly. Even the cross breeds and mongrels. Believe it or not the Labrador and Retriever are top of the list for 'biting' dogs in both the USA and UK. People get a breed of dog because they like its looks and think all dogs are the same. Each breed needs different handling depending on what it was originally bred for! I'm a German Shepherd lover and I rescue them and hate seeing people scared because they have like you had a bad experience.

Yes I agree with the first response, bad owners not bad dogs!! Some people own these dogs that should not, they are for the experienced dog owner!!! Just like Akita's, Rotts and several other breeds. There are always exceptions to every rule though, Back yard breeders have also helped to give this and several other breeds a bad name.

They breed dogs that should have never been used for breeding just to have puppy's. You should never blame a breed for what man has done to it. We should make it illegal to breed dogs unless you have a breeders lic. We should not allow certain breeds to be owned by certain people. I know this would all be very hard to do but I am so sick of people blaming the breed when we are the ones who have made it the way it is.

Sorry but I have met the sweetest pit bulls and also the meanest but again it is all in where they are gotten from (GOOD BREEDERS) not back yard breeders and how they are raised

I see your point, but I have been bitten by 4 LABS one even bit me twice. And not just little nips, they ALL broke the skin and I was pretty bloody! I have also been bitten by cockers, english setters, huskies, and others, but not ONE problem from a bully breed.

This is not to say that there are not bad ones, but you have to realize that the good ones outweighs the bad ones and that these are NOT THE ONLY DOGS THAT BITE!!!!

Also just because I have recieved alot of bited from labs, does not make me scared of the breed, and just because there are a few downright viscious labs doesn't mean that the breed as a whole is bad

Hope you understand, and may one day experiance the love that a pitty or other bully breed can bring

the one you was cornered by r u sure it was a staff? a purebred staff? it was prolly a cross obviously a stray or a bad owner or it wouldve been muzzled and on a leash, im sorry for your experience, but ive been bitten by a chihauaha but i still think they are cute all dogs have good and bad days and you are right in what you say, ive a really old pure staffie ***** with very few teeth shes never had a moment of nastiness, but i still muzzle and leash her , just in case, also if a dog smells fear in you it will make the dog scared as it cant see what you are scared of it just knows the scent of fear in the end the dog beleives you are the danger so it tries to protect itself, also looking a dog in the eye isnt a good idea

Cause it just takes some people a long time to get it. They need to be attacked by their own dog first. And its always a bad owner and never a bad dog too. I too was attacked and it was not the fault of the owner. I had known all involved for a very long time. I had been good friends with the dog for five years. I agree.

if a dog is behaving badly you can, without a doubt, expect to find an owner that neglected to act responsibly with the ownership of an aggressive breed. owning a staffie or pit or the like, requires much more work than owning a shih tzu. we blame the breed or the dog itself for the crimes of the human and we need to ask ourselves if thats the smart thing to do. we tend to blame the parents if a minor gets into trouble, asking what they did or didn't do to cause this behavior. same situation.

Bad owner/breeder equals bad dog. Dogs do as they are trained to do and or allowed to do. Humans on the other hand have the capabilities to be be nice, evil or criminal. And there other dogs of other breeds that are just as aggressive as any staffie.
