We got a puppy that is supposed to be half chihuahua and half rat terrier, but he is not. He is either half rat terrier or jack russel, but the other half we don't know. He is about 12-15 pounds and is only 3 months old. He is growing very fast. He goes back to the vet next week for more shots and we'll see if the vet can tell then. We just thought we would see if anyone has any clues. Thank you for any ideas you might have!

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/ratterrier.htm provides a block of information for the acceptable heights/weights of the Rat Terriers; however, the Rat Terrier Club of America (www.ratterrierclub.com/facts/index.html) states they do not recognize a "toy" in the breed. According to several sites, a Rat Terrier can weigh up to 35 lbs and I have seen several larger ones and they are actually very dignified looking dogs when they mature.
Your puppy very much resembles a Rat Terrier and, in fact, in the pictures on the site you provided, there doesn't appear to be much Chihuahua overly visible in him. He is a cutie, isn't he? =)
I think it could be plausible that he has taken completely after the Rat Terrier side of his gene pool and is just a larger Rat Terrier. He's a cute puppy and both the Rat Terriers and the Chihuahuas have a lot of great qualities and make wonderful pets if properly trained from a young age.

Hon... that's just going to be a BIG prettily marked mutt. Looks like he might finish out at about 45 pounds. The ONLY resemblance to a Rat Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier is his color and markings.
BTW.... most Vets really don't know a Rat Terrier from a Fox Terrier, etc. So don't count on a Vet IDing the pup's breed(s).
Just so you know.... I am not antiVet, they're great people in the medical field. They are not taught breed identification. Unless they have a personal interest in learning about breeds.

Judging by the last pic on your Dogster page there is a lot of terrier in him .. what else is anyone's guess. With a lot of these mixed breeds it's merely speculation on what their genetic make up is.
Because he is so young yet it's hard to say how he will look in a few months or at one year. Puppies change so much in appearance as they grow. He looks a lot like a JR right now. There may not be too much else in his makeup. Do you know anything about the parent(s)?

He is sooo cute. I don't see any chihuahua in him. Looks more like a Jack Russell. It's too early to tell. I have a pure bred Italian Greyhound, but she didn't look like one when we got her. She does now. I would wait. I hope you didn't pay too much for a mixed breed pup especially since it is unclear as to what breeds were involved. I'll link up with ya at dogster!

The bug eyes in the one picture make me think of a pug. I have a pug/terrier and they look very similar.

he looks like a mix of beagle and some sort of terrier. Beagle b/c of his coloring, especially around his face and terrier b/c of his ears. maybe your vet can tell you but that is my guess.
