I took the niacin well before the drug screening and gave it enough time to pass through my system. Turns out, it didn't work at all! Friends and associates I've spoken to said it worked for them and they recommended it to me. Did I do something wrong? Were the pills I got duds or something?

Because, if you asked someone who actually knew something about niacin, they would have told you that it does nothing of the sort.
Megadoses of niacin (vitamin B3) can lower lipid levels in some people but don't "cleanse your system" or anything like that.

Niacin opens the blood cappillaries and helps the blood cleanse itself.
It is NOT a failsafe way to pass a drug test. Only abstinence does that.

not all medications work for everyone the same way, and i have never heard of a dud pill, but you never know lol

Didn't work for me either. next time try golden seal or sure-gel a few hours before.
