the right side of my neck has been very stiff and hard for the past couple years. it doesnt hurt, it is just extremely uncomfortable. i feel like i have to stretch it out every two miniutes. there are also two small bumps, one bigger than the other, right next to eachother in the middle of that same side. this side feels very muscular and hardned compared to the other side, and when i let my head hang with my chin on my chest, and relax all my muscles, my head turns slightly to the right by itsself wihtout any effort. what could this be? are the bumps normal if they are kind of hard, and move side to sdie when i press down on them, but dont move all around my neck?

You need to see your Doctor, and let him/her figure that one out.

You sound like you are having the same problem I've got. The lumps in my neck (left side) got so big I couldn't hang my neck. I knew something was not right but I didn't want to get it check but routin blood work showed my calcuim levels high and now I've got to get a sonogram of my throat and neck. He thinks I've got hyperparathyroidism and after reading some of the systems I've really think that's what it is also. I'm very scared of what the treatment will be. I've got twins boy/girl who graduate this year and I really didn't want to get it check until after graduation. My advice to you is don't let it go like I did because now they say if it's as bad as they think it could be cancer now and require surgery. Go get it check asap. because the earlier you catch it the better. Good Luck and I hope you get better soon

I had problems just like that. I went to a pain management clinic. It was a long long way from where I live but she did a great job with me! The lumps I had were just from muscle tension. My muscles were so tight that they pulled my neck in weird directions. I went in for a series of trigger point injections. Some Dr.'s will use a steroid injection others just use saline. My Dr. used saline. Then immediately after the injection you go to physical therapy then you go for the next 2 days for pt. You do this whole process usually 3 times. My Dr. did mine 4 times. While you go to pt they teach you specialized exercises to condition your neck. I used to go to a chiropractor all the time 3 to 4 times per week for a long time. I have not had to go to ANYBODY since I went to Pain Management. It has been over a year! I am so happy! I still get pain but I can get it under control quickly by myself. Another thing that works really good for the knots is to go to a pt office and ask if they have a thera cane to sell you. Mine cost about 35 dollars. Ask them to show it to you and ask them if they can tell you how to use it. It works very well to work the knots out of your shoulders yourself. Just be careful if you do get one not to get too high up on your neck due to the fact that you have major arteries that run through your neck. The cane is a very safe and effective tool to use for the management of pain. My Dr. is in Sioux Falls SD so if you live anywhere near there or could get there she is well worth the trip! The bumps are just like tissue kind of. It's hard to explain. They won't hurt you you just need to work them out by relaxing your neck and doing certain exercises. I am not a Dr. and I havent seen you but it sounds just exactly like mine. If you have insurance I would really think you could benefit from going and having something like that done. She also told me that if you wait a long time it could get worse and you would have even less chance to correct it. That is one of the reasons I had to have injections 4 times. Also pay attention to yourself-do you pull your shoulders up a lot as if you are shrugging? I did and still do from time to time and I have to be aware of it so I can remember to pull my shoulders down and back so I don't have so much tension in my neck area. I hope it all works out for you!

I almost guarantee those hard spots are knots in the muscle called trigger points. Start by seeing a massage therapist to help get them to loosen up and get rid of the probable fear that not knowing can produce.
Read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies for more information.

This sounds like chronic extreme muscle tension to me and may be caused by a pinched nerve or spinal misalignment in the neck.
I would at least consult a chiropractor as soon as possible.
