Check out the book, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." It's about learning how to draw, but it says that penmanship is like drawing. There are certain characteristics of "nice" writing. Check your local library. You'll find the chapter about writing near the end of the book.

Basically, you should keep the height and the slant uniform. Make sure loops are clear (they have a space inside).

Knowing that, the rest is practice. Write slowly as practice, then speed it up. Make sure that your hand is relaxed and write with the whole arm, not just the wrist. "Let it flow." Ideally, the hand is floating above the page ever so slightly.

But you're also right that your choice of pen is important. (That's also from the book.) The old Bics or Papermates are the best, after they're "warmed up".

Good luck.

My handwriting is horrible. Even if I tried really hard it still looks horrible. I get made fun of a lot about it and it was even referred to as a little boys writing when the first learn how to handwrite. I hate when I have to sign the receipt or a contract for work, I try to make it seem like I'm in a rush but in all honestly that's how it looks like normally.

There's no instant solution to get better handwriting: the only thing to do is to practise a lot and take it slow. You have to learn to make your letter shapes again all over from scratch - practise writing a line of a's and then a line of b's and so on. Make them as neat and clear as you can. Then practise writing out words and then sentences, writing slowly, concentrating all the time on keeping it clear and neat. Gradually you'll be able to speed up but keep the clarity.

The other thing is to make sure that you're sitting up straight and holding the pen properly. It should be held firmly but not too tightly, and rest on your middle finger. Use your whole hand to write: some people just 'draw' the letters with the tips of their fingers, and that usually results in messiness.

Good luck!

Man, I had the same problem and I solved it just two weeks ago. My problem was that I didn't focus on what I was writing, I daydreamed. The idea is to focus on the word you are writing, also, get a narrow pen(or which one is comfortable), try changing the way you hold the pen.

Find yourself something on Palmer Penmanship. It's the only thing I know that will take you through letter formation from the beginning, especially since you've got old habits to break.
