OxyContin is a time-release formulation of oxycodone, a synthetic codeine. It's prescribed for people with severe, daily pain. Unfortunately, it is also abused by some who crush the tablets to break the time-release mechanism and make all of the drug release at once. (It is NOT heroin, so ignore anyone who says it is.)

OxyContin contains oxycodone, a very strong narcotic pain reliever similar to morphine. OxyContin is designed so that the oxycodone is slowly released over time, allowing it to be used twice daily. You should never break, chew, or crush the OxyContin tablet since this causes a large amount of oxycodone to be released from the tablet all at once, potentially resulting in a dangerous or fatal drug overdose.

This is a drug that you want to stay away from unless you have severe pain. I was addicted to this drug and didn't even know it until ran out of the drug. I had back surgery and was prescribed OxyContin. I took it as it stated and some days didn't take one at all. When my prescription ran out I stated having bad leg pain, arms jerking, uncontrolable diarrhea. I really felt terrible and didn't know why until a friend told me that I was going through with drawl from the OxyContin. Well needless to say I couldn't stand the pain of the with drawl and still in pain from the surgery so I called my doc. and the wrote me another prescription and another and another. This went on for about six months,. Then he said he couldn't give me anymore. So then I went to the streets and paid as much as $100 for a 80mg of OxyContin. I've been off of the drug for awhile now but I'm not going to lie I lost EVERYTHING because of this drug,.So my advice to you is stay away from this or any other kind of pain meds that are so addictive. You can be addict and not even realize it until it's to late. Tell your doc to give you Ultram or something that's non-narcotic. You can get addicted to anything but Ulram would be alot easier to stop than OxyContin would. I hope my answer helped you, but if not I'm sorry.

Oxycontin is a highly addictive and abused time release pain medication indicated for severe pain. (cancer, surgical hip replacements etc.) It is not for routine pain medication like an as needed medication like Vicodan (also highly addictive). Oxycontin is time released and also since it has abuse potential, it is a leading cause of accential overdose and death. It has been very controversial in the medical Field due o abuse and overdose. It should never be prescribed lightly. It is found available as a street drug these days and thus addiction and death occur. People crush it and take it in the nose, vein etc.and since it is time released you take way to much in a dose this way. Unless it is medically indicdicated stay away from it.

A time-release form of synthetic codeine, in other words a stronger but time-release dose of oxycodone, also known as Percocet.
It is an addictive drug which is much subject to abuse, and because when crushed up or administered incorrectly, can produce overdose effects, including death.

(My apologies to the few that really need it)

It is one of many pain medications that are used because no one is teaching how to deal with muscles, pain and referred pain so we don't need drugs. Great for the Md's bad for us.

Read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies if pain is the cause you may be able to not use the meds.
